The earliest known example of glasses in art is a fresco painted by the Italian painter TOMMASO DA MODENA in a church in Reviso in 1352. The figure in the fresco is an old priest who is intently reading a manuscript and wearing a pair of glasses on the bridge of his nose.
Zhao xihu's records are half a century earlier than those in Italy. But some historians believe the characters were added during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). But what is more certain is that according to current sources, sunglasses were probably invented in China. According to the 12th-century literature written by Liu Qi, the sunglasses were made of smoke crystals and were usually worn only by government officials, not to block out the glare of the sun, but to shield others from his reactions while listening to confessions.
